Today, let us look at the tenth couplet or Chaupai of Shri Hanuman Chalisa -

“लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये । श्रीरघुवीर हरषि उर लाये ॥

"Laye Sanjivan, Lakhan jiyaye.

Shri Raghuvir harashi ur laye."

"By fetching the Sanjivani herb you saved Lakshman. Scion of the Raghu clan

hugged you in delight.”

As a progress from the previous verses, now Goswami Tulsidas ji ha proceeded to paise Lord Hanuman not for his looks, but his deeds. To praise Lord Hanuman, Tulsidas chooses to praise the greatest act Hanuman performs in servitude of Lord Rama by bringing the Sanjivani herb to heal Lakshman.

In this couplet, Goswami Tulsidas is talking about when Hanuman gets the Sanjeevani herb to revive Lakshman and through this act he delights the heart of Lord Ram.

Most of us have always seen the image of Hanuman carrying a hill in one hand and a mace in another. This hill or mount is the center of the current couplet.

During the war of Lanka between Lord Ram and Ravana, Indrajit (Ravana's son) used a special weapon - "Nagapasha" or the weapon of the serpents. Lakshmana who is considered as an avatar of Sheshnaag - let himself be hurt by the weapon or else the sanctity of the weapon be lost. Due to this, Laskhmana falls on earth and looses consciousness. Looking at him, Ram and the entire army is saddened. Every medical doctor or know-how is summoned for advise. Finally, Jambvant (the wise bear) who is also a reputed friend of Hanuman and Sugreeva, recommends the use of a special herb "Sanjeevani" to revive Lakshmana. The only trouble was that the herb is found only on a particular hill in Himalayas, and the herb must be administered to Lakshmana before the sunrise else it would be too late to save him in his human form.

While everyone was wondering how to achieve this task, Ram approached Hanuman with all his trust and requested him to fly to Himalayas and bring back the herb before the start of dawn. Hanuman is filled with joy that his lord has trusted him and asked him for a service. Hanuman bowed to Ram and with his permission flies to the Himalayas in search of sanjeevani.

Hanuman flies to Himalayas in the northern direction looking for Sanjeevani from South. During his journey, he again encounters three tests and finally reaches the mountain. When Hanuman leaves Lanka to look for Dronagiri in Himalayas, Ravana also asked one of his demons Kalanemi to deter Hanuman from his task. Kalanemi disguised as a sage, recommends Hanuman to take a bath and pray while he prepares to help Hanuman in his quest. However, during the process, Hanuman understand the true intentions of Kalanemi and then kills him. Hanuman then flies over further north. Since, the time was running out and he could not identify the herb in the darkness of the night, Hanuman decided to lift up the entire mountain and take it to Lanka. This is the image that most of us have seen while growing up - either in calendar art, posters or in temples.

As Hanuman is known to have brought life through sanjeevani and remove the poisonous effect of the nagapasha, in many temples he is adorned with garlands made of poisonous leaves. This is done with the same idea that Hanuman will be able to absorb all the poison from our lives and shower us with all his greatness and positivity to fill in our lives. This attribute of Hanuman is also a reason why he is closely associated with Shiv as he is the only other God to be known for taking in poison and saving the world from its effects.

Not only Hanuman successfully returns to Lanka with the mountain full of herbs, his act fills Rama with happiness. Looking at his Lord happy is the greatest reward for Hanuman. Hanuman's relentless servitude towards Rama is commendable and something for all of us to learn from.

Another important facet from this episode is Hanuman carrying a mountain. In our day to day life, we often carry a mountain of stress and issues over ourselves. Our devotion to Hanuman would help save those mountains as well as he has all the strength to elevate the mountain on his hand and lighten us up with his energy.
