Today, let us look at the eleventh couplet or Chaupai of Shri Hanuman Chalisa -

“रघुपति कीन्हि बहुत बड़ाई । तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई ॥

"Raghupati kinhi bahut badai.

Tum mam priya bharatahi sam bhai"

"Raghupati praises you a lot and calls you same as Bharat in affection.”

Proceeding forward from the previous verses, Goswami Tulsidas says that even Shri Ram praises you a lot for your service and calls you same as Bharat in affection.

Though this couplet is an extension of the previous couplet and extends the stories laid out in the previous couplet, there is a much deeper meaning attached in here.

The greatest reward for any of us is being recognized. And if the recognition comes from the person you adore or idolize, the reward is the greater. There is no other satisfaction greater than the feeling you get, when the person acknowledges your efforts and feels grateful for anything you have done.

In our corporate or even homely jobs, we are always seeking an approval from others around us and others who are above us. Any small approval or words of encouragement fills us with joy and excitement, helping us forget the hard work and getting charged for even more handwork. At the same time, any small discouraging remark can leave a greater impact on our mind and may jeopardize the greater goal.

In this stanza, Goswami Tulsidas tells that Lord Shri Ram praises Hanuman for his act of bringing Sanjeevni to save Lakshman. For Hanuman, Shri Ram is his world. Through this stanza, Tulsidas is evoking the sense of satisfaction into Hanuman and is requesting Hanuman of his inherent powers.

While praising Hanuman, Lord Shri Ram compares his affection with the same with his affection for Bharat. This is a great statement as well.

Bharat is another brother of Ram, whom Ram has entrusted to rule Ayodhya while he serves his term in exile. Ram readily agreed to go to exile and give up his right to throne of Ayodhya for his brother Bharat. Ram forgave his mother Kaikeyi for her boons that exiled him. Ram loves his brother Bharat so much that he is ready to do anything for him. Though Lakshman also loves Ram and is ready to do anything for Ram, the love for Bharat is a little different. Ram and Lakshman are known as incarnations  of Vishnu and Sheshnag. Hence they are always inseparable. However, Bharat personifies the human nature and the creation of nature itself. This is the reason, why Ram never compares Hanuman with Lakshman, but Bharat. He knows Lakshman is always with him in servitude, but Bharat has the ability to think independently and yet is always ready to be serving Shri Ram.

Another perspective to gain from this would be - Bharat is Ram's brother and is a prince of Ayodhya. He has learned great arts, culture and many other knowledge just like Ram. Hanuman on the other hand, has lived in a forest and has never learnt the ways of the city. He is not as cultured as Bharat and probably not same caste as Bharat. But, with Ram calling Hanuman a brother same as Bharat, the differentiating lines of caste, culture, money are all diminished. Not only does Ram embraces Hanuman as his brother, he breaks the shackles of the society that creates differences.

This couplet, once again explains the need of inclusivity and reminds us that even God themselves do not differentiate, then why should we?
